Lisa Muswagon & Hellnback

Lisa Muswagon is a Nakoda Cree member of the Pimicikamak Cree Nation also known as Cross Lake in Northern Manitoba. She grew up in Winnipeg throughout her childhood and her community in her late teens where she graduated high school. At a young age, she received a gift of the hand drum and has been a performer since. She obtained her Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager Diploma. A mother of 4, Lisa continued her studies and is a full time student at the University of Winnipeg completing a degree in business and a major in Writing and Communications. 

Hellnback also known as Karmen Omeasoo is from the Samson Cree Nation in Alberta. The community is part of the hub of Maskwacis Cree Nation south of Edmonton. A veteren in the native hip hop industry, Omeasoo has come a long way. Hellnback first gained international recognition as a founding member of the ground breaking group War Party. Moving from his native Alberta to Winnipeg, Manitoba in the early 2000’s, Hellnback co-founded the popular and respected rap crew WARPARTY and was the main stable member with the group Team Rezofficial.  Hellnback is currently a solo artist who realeased his first album in 2015 titled #FOE Family Over Everything. The project earned two nominations at the 2015 Indigenous Music Awards for Best Album Cover and Best Rap/Hip Hop Album. Hellnback received the IMA's Most Outstanding Manitobans in 2015 and earned #4 on Ace Burpee's Top 100 Most Fascinating Manitobans at the time.

It was 20 years ago today that we made our return to the FM dial, bringing you stimulating music and talk programming to our fair city and beyond. We've certainly learned a lot during these past 20 years, proudly making some amazing radio. There might have been a few missteps along the way, and we thank you for bearing with us. We're forever thankful to all of the volunteers who have passed through our doors. Your presence and contributions will never be forgotten - you are the lifeblood of UMFM. ⠀

Pup-stock Music Festival

Ryan Sorensen and Simon King from Disraeli Dreamers joined Josh Kostelnyk from Little Black Lungs to talk about and promote the upcoming and highly anticipated Pup-Stock Music Festival.

The Pup-Stock Festival is coming to Winnipeg on Saturday, June 24th in support of Manitoba Mutts. The concert will feature 7 live and local bands. The fun begins at 5 pm with a new band on every 45 minutes, so make sure to come down early so you catch them all!

To celebrate Valentines Day with me, Sara Wray Enns came onto the Winnipeg Music Project to talk about her new title of experimental composer of a marching band set to take place in the Heart of Winnipeg. She also shared her love of local music by talking about her involvement at UMFM and shared some wonderful local songs.
(I also snuck in my own song Almost As Much because of the Valentine theme.)

It was our first live show and we interviewed ME (Ashley) to talk about the Winnipeg Music Project and the BreakOut West Conference that happened this past weekend. Jared, the station manager, interviewed me and we chatted/bonded.

Rather than meeting with another artist or musician, Sam Thompson from the WitchPolice Radio came onto the show to talk about his own podcast, music, interviewing musicians, and their upcoming event called The Big Mix Up.
